Core is Key IGCSE Science
05-12
Over the course of their study students from International schools in Hangzhou will learn about unifying patterns and themes in science and use them in new and changing situations. Students will grow in their knowledge of scientific facts, terminology, principles, concepts and ability to carry out practical work. They will then use this to apply what they have gained into a variety of different scenarios and environments.
They will have to make judgement calls based on information that is put in front of them to apply safely to a variety of investigations in a practical manner. They will also learn key cross curricular and life skills such as how to analyse, interpret and evaluate data of experimental methods. Furthermore, they will be drawing conclusions that are consistent with evidence from experimental activities and suggesting possible improvements for further investigations. At wellington we will develop the much-needed life skills of appropriately selecting, sorting and sifting through information to present logical conclusions.
Students begin studying for their IGCSE in Year 9 at Wellington College International Hangzhou and over the three years students will learn about different aspects of science.
[ Biology ]
Students will study the cells of living organisms, the structure and functions of living organisms, reproduction, genetics, ecology and how biological resources are used by humans.
[ Chemistry ]
Students will focus on the principles of chemistry, physical chemistry, inorganic and organic chemistry.
[ Physics ]
Students will learn about forces, electricity, waves, energy, states of matter, radioactivity and astrophysics.
Students will take one of two different pathways for their IGCSE course:
Route 1
Students will study the three sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) separately and be awarded three independent IGCSE Grades. Each IGCSE grade will have two papers. We will not be offering the option of only studying two subjects.
Route 2
Students will study the three sciences together and be awarded an IGCSE Certificate worth two IGCSEs. They will sit three papers.
Students studying either will have the opportunity for further study at A level, which will enable them to study science at the best universities in the world.
The content is relevant, engaging and up to date. Assessment is in the form of written examinations with questions designed to be accessible to students of all abilities.
The equipment we have at Wellington College International Hangzhou is of a top international standard, we can run multiple experiments in our laboratories. Having the opportunity to access state-of-the-art equipment will provide students with a great advantage for assessed practical work at A level and University.
Our learners will be supported through a variety of ways such as in class support, having access online to materials and knowledge organisers, amongst many others. Students will also be provided with opportunities for extending their knowledge in different ways as we aim to teach beyond the curriculum, to further engage students in Science.
